Disney to Lay Off 1,000 Employees in First Cuts Under New CEO

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Walt Disney Company is planning to lay off up to 1,000 employees in the coming weeks, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, as quoted by entertainment industry outlet Deadline.

The layoffs would mark one of the first major restructuring moves under Disney’s new chief executive, Josh D’Amaro, who officially took over on March 18.

According to the reports, many of the cuts are expected to hit Disney’s marketing division, following the company’s recent effort to consolidate marketing operations across its film, television, and streaming businesses.

Deadline reported that the planned layoffs are tied in part to Disney’s move earlier this year to promote veteran executive Asad Ayaz as its first-ever Chief Marketing and Brand Officer, a role aimed at reducing overlap across studio entertainment, experiences, and ESPN.

Like many major Hollywood studios, Disney has been adjusting to slimmer profits from streaming services compared with the once-lucrative traditional television business.

The company has also faced weaker box office returns and intensifying competition from technology companies, prompting a broader push to streamline costs while redirecting investment toward faster-growing digital businesses.

Disney had more than 230,000 employees globally at the end of its most recent fiscal year, most of them part-time workers at its theme parks, Deadline reported.

While the new round of layoffs is significant, it is far smaller than the sweeping job cuts carried out under former CEO Bob Iger.

Since Iger returned to lead the company in 2022, Disney has cut more than 8,000 jobs through several rounds of restructuring between 2023 and 2025, generating about US$7.5 billion in cost savings.

According to reports, plans for the upcoming layoffs had already been in motion before D’Amaro formally assumed the top job.

D’Amaro, 54, is a 28-year Disney veteran. Before becoming CEO, he led Disney’s Experiences segment since 2020 and previously served as president of Walt Disney World Resort. Since taking over last month, he has not publicly outlined a detailed restructuring plan, but people familiar with the company told The Wall Street Journal that one of his priorities is to make Disney’s divisions work together more quickly and efficiently.
