TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds battered several areas across Yogyakarta on Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2026. The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded numerous incidents of fallen trees, snapped branches, and roofs ripped off houses due to the extreme weather.

The Head of BPBD Yogyakarta, Agustinus Ruruh Haryata, stated that the severe weather conditions began around 2 p.m. and are expected to persist until 4 p.m.

Earlier, an early warning issued by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds across Yogyakarta City, Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul regencies.

"The BPBD rapid response team, alongside related agencies, immediately deployed to conduct assessments and emergency response at several affected locations," Agustinus said on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

In Yogyakarta City, the most extensive damage was reported in Gondokusuman and Jetis districts. On Jalan Sunaryo, an uprooted tree brought down telephone and power lines, completely blocking road access. Fallen trees were also reported on Jalan Ahmad Jazuli, specifically within Sanata Dharma University's Campus V, damaging a motorcycle parking area.

Furthermore, broken branches on Jalan Kemakmuran reportedly blocked neighborhood access roads for local residents. Meanwhile, on Jalan Cik Di Tiro, a fallen tree struck the signage plaque of the YAP Special Eye Hospital.

In Jetis District, a fallen tree on Jalan Tentara Pelajar in Bumijo Village disrupted both road access and telephone networks. Strong winds in the Jogoyudan area of Gowongan Village caused a residential roof to collapse, while several house roofs in the Gondolayu and Kleringan areas were reportedly ripped away by the gusts.

BPBD Yogyakarta noted that emergency crews are currently clearing the debris by cutting up the fallen trees, while coordinating across various departments to accelerate evacuations and reopen blocked roads. The cleanup operations involve personnel from multiple agencies working alongside local residents. BPBD Yogyakarta has urged the public to remain vigilant against the threat of heavy downpours and strong winds, which are likely to persist in several parts of Yogyakarta through this afternoon and into the evening.
