TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago assured that the government, alongside the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), will monitor public demonstrations at the House of Representatives (DPR) to ensure a peaceful and orderly process.
"The Regional Police (Polda), Regional Military Commands (Kodam), and the community will work together to protect and support our citizens as they convey their aspirations to the DPR, ensuring these messages are channeled effectively and received well by lawmakers," Djamari said following a morning walk at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday, August 27.
He noted that security measures are essential to prevent infiltration by outside groups that could disrupt the gathering and distort the public's message.
"We want citizens exercising their right to address the DPR to be protected and escorted so they can reach the complex without disturbance, which is precisely why police, military, and local residents are working together to preserve peace in Jakarta," Djamari explained.
Furthermore, he clarified that the security presence is not intended to curb free expression, but to guarantee that public aspirations are conveyed safely, orderly, and directly to authorities.
The joint deployment between the TNI and Polri seeks to uphold public order and security across Jakarta, while also safeguarding residents who are not involved in the demonstrations.
"That is what we will implement, especially as some citizens have already arrived, and we are organizing everything so conditions remain orderly. There is nothing extraordinary about it," Djamari said.
He expressed hope that with this security detail, citizens can voice their demands safely while everyday public activities continue as normal.
"Once presented, we hope lawmakers at the DPR will follow up on and address the public's expectations. I believe that's what I need to convey," Djamari concluded.
Previously, House Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized that parliament remains open to public input and urged demonstrators to maintain order ahead of a planned rally on August 27, 2026, outside the parliamentary complex in Jakarta.
She expressed hope that the rally would remain peaceful and that demonstrators would help uphold order so the expression of public demands can proceed smoothly.
"Public participation and input are certainly welcome at the DPR building," Puan said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
She added that House Commission III had already received recommendations from several academics regarding the drafting of the Asset Forfeiture Bill.
