TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Education Minister Nadiem Makarim has questioned the different treatment given to former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah, who was taken to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detention center without handcuffs or a detainee vest after being named a suspect in an alleged money laundering case.

Nadiem compared Febrie’s treatment with his own experience when he was named a suspect by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO).

He said he was immediately detained and was not allowed to give media interviews during his arrest process.

“For those of us who have experienced criminalization, there is no such thing as not wearing a detainee vest or being unhandcuffed,” Nadiem told reporters before attending an appeal hearing at the Jakarta High Court on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026.

Febrie Taken to KPK Detention Center Without Vest or Handcuffs

Febrie Adriansyah arrived at the KPK headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday night, July 24, 2026, after the AGO detained him in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to state insurer PT Asabri.

According to Tempo’s observation, Febrie arrived at the KPK detention facility at 11:22 p.m. local time in a green AGO prisoner transport vehicle. As he stepped out of the vehicle, journalists surrounded him and asked why he was not wearing the AGO’s pink detainee vest and handcuffs.

“Oh, no,” a prosecutor accompanying him replied.

Febrie then responded, “Not wearing a vest, right?” while pointing at the collar of his gray batik shirt.

AGO Deputy Attorney General for Oversight Rudi Margono later explained that Febrie was not wearing the detainee vest because the process took place late at night and officers were in a hurry.

“Because it was rushed and it was already late,” Rudi said.

KPK Says Febrie Later Wore Detainee Vest

Three days later, the KPK confirmed that Febrie had worn a detainee vest during the registration process at its detention facility.

“Regarding the use of the detainee vest, it was implemented when FA completed registration at the KPK detention center,” KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said on Monday, July 27, as quoted by Antara.

Budi said the procedure showed that Febrie did not receive special treatment from the anti-corruption agency. He stressed that the same rules apply to other detainees held by the KPK.

Febrie was named a suspect by the AGO in an alleged money laundering case related to PT Asabri. He is currently being held at the KPK detention center in South Jakarta.
