TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Canada have agreed on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA). President Prabowo Subianto and Canadian PM Mark Carney witnessed the signing in Ottawa, Ontario, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, local time.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment in several sectors, including food security, critical minerals, renewable energy, and the digital economy. In a joint statement published on the official website of the Canadian Prime Minister, the two heads of state agreed that ICA-CEPA reflects their joint commitment to opening trade relations in accordance with international law.
"The Prime Minister and President agreed that joint trade facilitation on prime agricultural commodities, including agri-food, can further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in support of Indonesia’s food security agenda and sustainable two-way trade," the joint statement quoted from pm.gc.ca on Thursday, September 25, 2025, read.
The heads of state also agreed to prioritize women's empowerment and climate change in interstate cooperation. Against this backdrop, Indonesia's support is given for the Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement. Conversely, Canada also supports Indonesia's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In addition to the ICA-CEPA, Export Development Canada (EDC) and Indonesia's Investment Authority (INA) also agreed to explore cooperation in infrastructure, cleantech, renewable energy, and agri-food.
"The Leaders further welcomed the potential to expand partnership and investment collaboration between sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, as well as development finance institutions and other institutional investors," the joint statement said.
