TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia strongly condemns attacks on merchant vessels in the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, Yemen, especially after the recent attack on the MV Tihamah which affected Indonesian crew members.
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the condemnation was conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono in a telephone conversation with Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah Abdulaziz Al-Zouba on Wednesday, August 12.
"Of course, on this occasion, the Indonesian Foreign Minister strongly condemned this attack and emphasized the need for steps to prevent further escalation," Yvonne said at a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.
During the conversation, Sugiono expressed his appreciation to the Yemeni government for its assistance and facilitation of aid for the Indonesian crew members affected by the attack. He was particularly grateful for the government's efforts to open consular access for the crew members.
Yvonne said that Sugiono also emphasized Indonesia's commitment to continuing to work with Yemen to maintain regional peace and stability, as well as to prevent the escalation of conflict in the region.
Meanwhile, regarding the condition of the three Indonesian crew members on the MV Tihamah, the Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, confirmed that two were safe, while one was still missing.
"One other crew member has not yet been found, and the relevant parties are intensively carrying out search efforts in the sea area," said Heni.
She said Indonesia received the latest information regarding the condition of the Indonesian crew members on Thursday morning via a diplomatic note from the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ship was reported to be carrying 11 crew members: 8 Pakistani and 3 Indonesian citizens.
She said that one Indonesian crew member suffered minor injuries from debris but did not require treatment, while another Indonesian crew member was injured and received medical treatment at the hospital.
Following the incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat is taking the necessary steps to protect Indonesian crew members. These steps include preparing to facilitate their repatriation to Indonesia if conditions permit.
According to Anadolu, Yemen's government-affiliated television station Al-Jumhuriya TV reported on Tuesday that an attack allegedly carried out by the Houthi group in Yemen also killed two Pakistani nationals, according to initial reports.
The Bab Al-Mandeb Strait is an entrance to the Red Sea located on the western side of the Arabian Peninsula.
