TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and France are bolstering their strategic cultural partnership through a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and his French counterpart Catherine Pégard in Paris on Thursday, April 23.
As reported in an official press release from the Ministry of Culture, the meeting served as a follow-up to the Joint Declaration on Cultural Strategy, or Borobudur Declaration, initiated by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron as a framework for cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, both parties emphasized the continued growth of cultural cooperation between Indonesia and France, particularly in the sectors of cultural heritage, museums, the cultural industry, and digital transformation.
The two countries also witnessed the signing of two cooperation agreements: one between the École du Louvre and the Indonesia Heritage Agency (IHA), and the other between the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN) and InJourney.
Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that the meeting provided momentum to ensure the cooperation is served with concrete and sustainable implementation.
He emphasized that Indonesia encourages collaboration that produces tangible programs and directly benefits the cultural ecosystems of both countries.
"Indonesia-France cultural cooperation must be concrete, reciprocal, and have long-term impacts," said Fadli.
This collaboration includes the development of the Borobudur and Prambanan areas, strengthening the Museum Academy, and organizing an Indonesian exhibition at the Guimet Museum.
In addition, the two countries are promoting joint research with the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the protection of cultural heritage impacted by climate change through the ALIPH framework.
In the cultural industries sector, collaboration has expanded to include film, music, fine arts, and literature.
In the film sector, cooperation includes the sustainability of the Indonesia-France Film Lab, collaboration with La Fémis and CNC, and participation in international forums such as the Cannes Film Festival, Critics’ Week, and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Meanwhile, in the literary sector, cooperation includes the Choix Goncourt Indonésie program, Read Indonesia, and collaboration with the Centre national du livre through residency programs and literary festivals.
The two countries also highlighted the importance of digital cultural transformation, including cultural data management, asset digitization, and the development of digital cultural heritage-based co-creation.
