TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia has stopped importing diesel fuel since July 2026 following the government's successful development of B50 biodiesel, a palm oil-based fuel blend aimed at strengthening national energy independence.
Speaking at the TNI Harvest Festival in support of the food security program at Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang, East Java, on Friday, Prabowo said Indonesia had become the first country in the world to produce B50, a diesel fuel containing a 50 percent biodiesel blend derived from palm oil.
"Previously, we succeeded in becoming the first country in the world to produce B50. We are now producing diesel from palm oil. So, starting this July, we no longer import diesel from abroad," Prabowo said in a speech broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat in Jakarta.
Prabowo said ending diesel imports would bring greater economic benefits to Indonesians, as funds previously spent on purchasing fuel overseas could instead circulate domestically.
"It is better for that money to circulate in Indonesia and be enjoyed by palm oil farmers across the country," he said.
Indonesia's Push for Energy Self-Sufficiency
Prabowo said the government would continue accelerating its energy self-sufficiency program by developing fuels based on domestic resources.
In addition to implementing B50 biodiesel, the government has begun developing gasoline blended with 10 percent ethanol (E10) as an initial step toward wider bioethanol adoption.
The government is targeting an increase in the bioethanol blend to E20 and plans to accelerate the construction of new bioethanol plants to support the goal.
Prabowo said Indonesia currently has only one bioethanol production facility, meaning the country's production capacity needs to be expanded.
