TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will keep several alternative airports operating around the clock to maintain passenger mobility after eight airports were closed due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said.
The alternative airports include Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka, Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), and Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo.
"We have opened these alternative airports to give airlines options. Kertajati, Semarang, Juanda, Yogyakarta, and Solo will operate 24 hours," Dudy said in Jakarta on Sunday, September 6, as quoted by Antara.
The airports can be used for both arrivals and departures while operating conditions at the eight affected airports remain unsafe because of volcanic ash, he said.
Eight airports closed over volcanic ash
The eight airports temporarily closed because of the volcanic ash include Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten; Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta; and Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung.
The others are Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang; Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang; Taufik Kiemas Airport in West Pesisir, Lampung; and Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra.
The government initially scheduled the closures to remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.
Airlines are free to decide which alternative airports to use based on their operational needs, flight schedules, aircraft availability, and passenger-handling capacity.
Free transport to alternative airports
The Transportation Ministry and InJourney Airports are also providing ground transportation to help passengers travel from Soekarno-Hatta to alternative airports.
Passengers whose flights are diverted to Kertajati, Juanda, Solo, Semarang, or Yogyakarta can use designated train and bus services free of charge.
Dudy stressed that passengers would not be charged for transportation to the alternative airports. The measure is part of the government's efforts to assist travelers affected by disruptions caused by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
InJourney Airports and individual airlines are coordinating the arrangements so passengers receive clear information about their new departure airports and available ground transportation.
Airlines will directly inform passengers of any changes to their flight locations and departure schedules through their established customer service channels.
The decision to use an alternative airport, however, remains with each airline. Passengers can either continue their journey through a replacement airport or cancel their flights, depending on their needs.
"It depends on whether passengers still want to travel by transferring to these alternative airports or whether they want to cancel their trips," Dudy said.
The minister said the policy was intended to keep essential passenger movement to and from Jakarta running while maintaining flight safety during the temporary closures.
The government will continue coordinating with airlines, airport operators, and other stakeholders to ensure alternative-airport operations run smoothly and minimize the impact of the disruption to air travel.
