TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian rowing team clinched a silver medal at the 2025 World Rowing Championship in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, September 25. Ali Mardiansyah and Rafiq Wijdan Yasir secured the silver in the lightweight men's double sculls (LM2x) category.

This marks Indonesia's first medal in the most prestigious world-level rowing event. Ali and Rafiq finished second in the lightweight men's double sculls (LM2x) with a time of 6 minutes 47.40 seconds, behind the Chinese representatives, Yawei Li and Man Su, who clinched the gold with a time of 6 minutes 44.90 seconds.

"This is historic. It is the first time we have won a medal in a senior-level world championship. This achievement is very proud for the Indonesian rowing team," said Indonesia's head coach of rowing, Muhammad Hadris, to Antara.

The bronze medal was secured by the German duo, Joachim Agne and Paul Maissenhaelter, with a time of 6 minutes 50.24 seconds.

The success of Ali and Rafiq adds to Indonesia's significant achievements, following the U-23 team's win of a bronze medal at the 2017 World Rowing U-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Ferdiansyah, Ali Buton, Denri Maulidzar Al Ghifari, and Ardi Isadi secured the medal in the BLM4 category.

The achievement in Shanghai marks the first at a senior-level competition. In addition to the men's event, Indonesia also fielded the lightweight women's double sculls pair, Chelsea Corputty and Mutiara Putri.

They finished fifth with a time of 8 minutes 1.26 seconds. The event was won by the Chinese representatives, Zou Jiaqi and Fu Ling, with a time of 7 minutes 26.12 seconds.

Hadris mentioned that the silver success in Shanghai will be a valuable asset for the Indonesian rowing squad in preparation for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. "This achievement is a positive step and boosts the athletes' confidence to face future multi-event competitions," he added.
