Indonesia's BRIN Unveils DELL-E Delivery Robot for Housing Complexes, Offices

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has developed an autonomous delivery robot named DELL-E (Delivery Enhanced for Logistics & Last-mile Express) to support logistics services in areas with restricted access, such as apartments, gated residential complexes, offices, campuses, industrial zones, and government facilities.

These environments often pose challenges for couriers, who are typically only allowed to deliver items to security posts or designated drop-off points.

“In many cases, recipients must pick up their packages themselves. This is inefficient, especially in large areas with complex internal mobility,” said Roni Permana Saputra, a researcher at BRIN’s Smart Mechatronics Research Center, in a written statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

According to Roni, DELL-E was designed to improve delivery efficiency, reduce human workload, ensure consistent delivery times, and minimize errors and direct contact in controlled environments.

The robot is equipped with a multi-sensor navigation system that integrates LiDAR, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and GPS.

“The integration of these sensors allows DELL-E to map its surroundings, plan routes, and operate autonomously under various environmental conditions,” he said.

DELL-E is connected to a server-based application that enables users to place delivery requests and monitor their status in real time, provided there is an internet connection.

To enhance security, the robot features a QR code authentication system, ensuring that only authorized recipients can open its storage compartment and retrieve items.

Roni explained that the delivery process begins with an order placed through the application, followed by destination selection, automatic route planning, and autonomous delivery. During operation, the robot can detect and avoid obstacles to maintain safety.

Initial trials of DELL-E were conducted at the Samaun Samadikun Science and Technology Area in Bandung, with deliveries carried out from the autonomous laboratory to a security post.

Roni said the robot performed well in following routes and avoiding obstacles, although further improvements are still needed to enhance system reliability.

“As a domestically developed robotic innovation, DELL-E is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s technological independence in smart logistics,” he said.

In the long term, the robot could become part of the country’s smart city ecosystem, supporting efficient, secure, and sustainable autonomous delivery services while accelerating the adoption of service robots nationwide.
