TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator, said all of its locomotives and generator sets are now powered by B40 biodiesel, as the company prepares to adopt the higher B50 blend to further improve efficiency and sustainability in national transportation.

“All locomotives and gensets operated by KAI have been using renewable energy through B40 biosolar fuel,” KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said in a statement in Jakarta on April 12, as quoted by Antara.

She said the use of B40 reflects KAI’s support for the strategic push by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to expand renewable energy adoption in the transportation sector.

By using biodiesel, Anne added, railway operations generate lower emissions, strengthening their role as a more environmentally friendly logistics and transport solution.

“As a user of green energy technology, KAI continues to be a reliable mobility partner for the public,” she said.

“We understand that efficiency and affordable travel costs are very important to the public. In the midst of increasingly limited fuel conditions, trains remain a cost-effective and reliable mobility solution,” Anne said.

She added that the use of B40, an innovation promoted by the Energy Ministry, means that every passenger indirectly contributes to the broader transition toward sustainable and environmentally friendly energy.

“KAI pays great attention and is ready to support the next step of the Ministry of ESDM, which is the development of B50,” she said.

The government’s push to expand biofuel usage is part of a broader strategy to achieve national energy self-sufficiency and meet its net-zero emissions target by 2060.

KAI said it welcomed the planned rollout of B50 in the railway system. However, Anne stressed that safety remains the top priority, with all locomotives and gensets set to undergo a series of technical trials before B50 is fully implemented in passenger services.
