TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has urged the government to immediately resolve the findings of a number of children's snack products containing pork but labeled halal. Deputy Chair of the MUI Anwar Abbas assessed that this case is a serious problem that touches on religious aspects as well as allegations of public deception.

"This case must be resolved. The government must find out where the problem lies, must know why this could happen," said Anwar Abbas to Tempo, Thursday, April 24, 2025.

According to Anwar, Muslims have strict rules in religious teachings that prohibit the consumption of anything derived from pork. Therefore, the finding that several foods labeled halal actually contain haram elements, according to him, is not just a technical omission.

"For Muslims, this concerns a violation of religious teachings. Meanwhile, in this case there has been a discrepancy between the statement and the reality. They say the food is halal, when in fact it is haram," said Anwar.

He emphasized that the discrepancy between the halal label and the actual content could be categorized as a criminal act because it misleads consumers. "This can be categorized as a criminal act because there has been an act of deceiving the public," said Anwar.

Previously, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) together with the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) found several brands of children's snacks that used pork derivatives without including honest information on their packaging. Several of these products even had halal labels that were suspected of not being in accordance with the provisions.

The MUI asked the government not only to take action against naughty producers, but also to evaluate the halal product certification and supervision system in Indonesia. Anwar Abbas reminded that public trust in the halal label is highly dependent on the integrity and thoroughness of the supervision process.

The list of snacks containing pork announced by BPOM and BPJPH is as follows:

1. Corniche Fluffy Jelly Marshmallow (Marshmallow with Various Flavors of Lychee, Orange, Strawberry, Grape)

2. Corniche Teddy-shaped Apple Marshmallow (Apple Teddy Marshmallow)

3. ChompChomp Car Mallow (Car-shaped Marshmallow)

4. ChompChomp Flower Mallow (Flower-shaped Marshmallow)

5. ChompChomp Tube-shaped Marshmallow (Mini Marshmallow)

6. Hakiki Gelatin (Gel-forming Food Additive)

7. Larbee - TYL Marshmallow filled with Vanilla Jam (Vanilla Marshmallow Filling)

8. AAA Orange Marshmallow

9. SWEETME Chocolate Marshmallow.

Most of the above products use pork gelatin as one of their raw materials. Some even circulated with fake halal labels or without clear information regarding the porcine content, so it was considered to be misleading for Muslim consumers.
