TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian artistic gymnast Naufal Takdir Al Bari has passed away in Penza, Russia, on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The 19-year-old athlete had been receiving intensive treatment for 12 days at the G.A. Zakharyin Hospital after suffering an accident during training.
The Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) confirmed the news in an official statement on Friday.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun. Our national athlete, Naufal, has returned to Rahmatullah. Naufal was a talented young gymnast and a noble figure. Indonesian gymnastics has lost one of its best sons," said FGI Chairperson Ita Yuliati.
Naufal was considered one of Indonesia’s most promising athletes. He had been preparing for the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2025 in Jakarta, the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, and had been projected as a contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Since September 1, Naufal had been training with four fellow Indonesian male gymnasts at the Palace of Sport Training Center Burtasy in Penza, under a program funded by the National Sports Training Center (PPON) of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
During the training camp, Naufal suffered a serious accident that required him to be placed in intensive care. Throughout his hospitalization, FGI coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow, the Russian Gymnastics Federation, and the hospital to ensure he received the best possible treatment.
FGI is now working to facilitate the repatriation of Naufal’s body to Indonesia and to assist his family.
"We are in continuous coordination with his family, the East Java Provincial Sports Committee, the Indonesian Embassy in Russia, and the Russian Embassy in Jakarta to ensure the prompt repatriation of Naufal’s remains," Ita added.
