Indonesian Overseas Travel Drops 18.85%, BPS Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported a decline in Indonesian overseas travel in April 2026, with the number of national tourist trips falling by 18.85 percent compared to the previous month.

BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini said Indonesians made 644,000 overseas trips in April, down from 793,160 in March.

“On a year-on-year basis, there was also a decline of 30.54 percent,” Pudji said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, June 2, 2026.

Malaysia Remains Top Destination

BPS data showed that ASEAN countries continued to dominate the list of top destinations for Indonesian travelers. Malaysia remained the most visited country, accounting for 29.74 percent of total trips, slightly up by 0.01 percentage points from the previous month.

Other popular destinations included Singapore, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, South Korea, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Singapore accounted for 13.32 percent of trips, followed by Saudi Arabia at 11.76 percent, placing them second and third after Malaysia.

Air Travel Dominates Return Routes

In April, 639,510 trips returned through main entry points, while 4,150 entered via border crossings.

Air travel remained the dominant mode, accounting for 523,100 return trips. Sea and land entry points recorded 88,240 and 28,170 trips, respectively.

From January to April 2026, total Indonesian overseas trips reached 3.14 million, down 3.49 percent compared to the same period last year, Pudji added.
