Iran Prepares Large-Scale Funeral Procession for Ali Khamenei

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The funeral procession for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who reportedly died in late February, will be held on a large scale in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, according to Tehran authorities, as cited by Antara.

Tehran Deputy Mayor for Social and Cultural Affairs Mohammad-Amin Tavakolizadeh said on Tuesday that Khamenei’s body will be buried next to the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.

He said the funeral procession is scheduled to take place from the end of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 H to the beginning of Muharram 1448 H, or mid-June.

He added that the funeral ceremonies for Khamenei will last three full days, with the procession in Tehran set to continue for at least 24 hours.

Mashhad, where Khamenei will be buried, is expected to receive mourners from several countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Bangladesh.

Tavakolizadeh said the funeral ceremony is expected to become the largest gathering of Muslims and Shiite communities in the world.

Following the declaration of mourning in Iraq and symbolic funeral ceremonies held in several cities, he said he is confident that mourning will also be observed in other Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Yemen.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reportedly died in an attack on his residence and workplace in Tehran on the first day of a joint U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran on February 28.

Iran then responded with waves of missile and drone attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests in the region.

As part of its defensive strategy, Iran also imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz at the start of the conflict.

Since then, Iranian authorities have maintained control over navigation in the strategic waterway, allowing commercial vessels to pass under Iranian regulatory oversight.
