TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta's air quality was recorded as unhealthy, prompting advice for the public to wear masks when outdoors, according to the IQAir website on Sunday morning (updated at 06:00 WIB / Western Indonesian Time).
IQAir recorded Jakarta's air quality at an index of 155, with a PM2.5 pollutant concentration of 60.6 micrograms per cubic meter—12.1 times higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual air quality guideline value.
PM2.5 refers to airborne particles smaller than 2.5 microns (micrometers), including dust, smoke, and soot. Long-term exposure to these particles is linked to premature death, particularly among individuals with chronic heart or lung conditions.
Current health recommendations regarding air quality include wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, keeping windows closed to block out polluted air, and using air purifiers.
Jakarta's air quality today ranked fourth worst in Indonesia, following Pontianak (index 228), Serpong (index 191), and Tangerang (index 159).
Previously, the Jakarta Provincial Government, through its Health Agency, advised the public to stay hydrated to prevent dehydration, check air quality before engaging in activities, and protect vulnerable groups when air quality is poor.
Additionally, the public is urged to seek medical attention immediately if experiencing persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, or irritation in the eyes or throat.
