Jakarta Set to Launch Indonesia's First Film Commission, Says Deputy Governor

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta's provincial government is set to establish the country's first-ever Film Commission, a move aimed at propelling Indonesia's film industry onto the global stage. The announcement came directly from Jakarta's Vice Governor Rano Karno during his attendance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France.

"Jakarta will become the pioneer in forming the first Film Commission in Indonesia," Rano Karno said in an official statement in Jakarta on Saturday, May 17, as reported by Antaranews.

The Jakarta Film Commission is designed to support the growth of the national film sector by streamlining permits, promoting local locations for shooting, and expanding international collaborations. The commission aims to provide filmmakers with easier access to resources and incentives to foster creativity and competitiveness.

"Jakarta is not just here as a spectator, but as a key driver of Indonesia's film industry transformation toward a more inclusive and globally competitive future," said Rano, a veteran actor, during his visit to Cannes.

This year, Jakarta unveiled the Jakarta-Indonesia Pavilion, a showcase of Indonesian film creativity and a strategic meeting place for national filmmakers and global industry players. The pavilion serves as a hub where producers, distributors, and film market professionals from various countries come together.

Jakarta presented itself as an open cinematic city, ready to welcome collaborations and creative investments from around the world.

Alongside the pavilion events, the Jakarta government hosted Networking Hours featuring prominent film figures such as Christine Hakim, Garin Nugroho, Reza Rahadian, Chelsea Islan, Mya Santosa (Visinema), Vivian Idris (Jakarta Film Week), and Iko Uwais. The event fostered idea-sharing and strengthened networks between Indonesian filmmakers and international film communities.

Deputy Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha also praised Jakarta's strategic move to open access and broaden the national film industry's global connections.

Rano Karno's role in Cannes went beyond symbolic diplomacy. At the red carpet premiere of the film "Renoir," he reiterated his commitment to elevate Jakarta's film industry internationally.

"This event is not only a symbol of support for Indonesian filmmakers but also a concrete form of cultural diplomacy and promotion of Jakarta as a world-class cinema city," he told Antara on May 18.

Rano also met with representatives from the Tokyo Film Commission to discuss opportunities for joint productions and technical and creative exchanges across countries. Additionally, he held informal bilateral talks with delegates from the Netherlands Film Commission at Bistrot de Lerins in Cannes.

In every forum he attended, Rano always emphasized one key message: Jakarta is ready not only in terms of infrastructure but also in spirit — committed to building a healthy, inclusive, and competitive film ecosystem. "Jakarta is open for creative investments and eager to build mutually beneficial partnerships," he said.
