TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian star tennis player Janice Tjen was forced to end her singles career in the second round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships after losing to Daria Kasatkina in a three-set match in London, England, on Wednesday, July 1.
Tjen had a chance to take the first set in a tiebreak before being forced to concede to the Australian 7-6(5), 1-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes.
Tjen performed solidly in the opening set. After both players held serve until the score was tied at 6-6, the Jakarta-born player displayed a more composed attitude, rallying from a 1-5 deficit in the tie-break to secure the first set 7-5.
However, the momentum turned in the second set when Kasatkina ramped up the pressure from the start.
The world's number 65 broke Tjen's serve twice to take a commanding lead, ending the second set with a 6-1 victory, forcing the match into a decider.
In the third set, the two players again broke each other's serve early in the match. Kasatkina then capitalized on a break opportunity in the eighth game to turn the tables before securing a 6-4 victory after converting a match point in the final game.
Statistically, Kasatkina was more effective in utilizing her first serve. She won 63 of 90 points (70 percent) on first serve, while Janice collected 34 of 57 points (60 percent).
Wimbledon statistics show Kasatkina also appeared more aggressive at the net, winning 28 of 31 points (90 percent), while Janice only won 11 of 17 points (65 percent).
On the offensive side, Kasatkina recorded 37 winners and 37 unforced errors, while Janice recorded 26 winners and 40 unforced errors.
Kasatkina was also more effective in utilizing breakpoint opportunities, converting five of eight opportunities, while Janice only managed two of 10.
Despite her elimination, Janice Tjen's achievement by advancing to the second round was a positive note in her Wimbledon debut. She also remains at the All England Club to compete in the doubles event with her compatriot, Aldila Sutjiadi.
Indonesian women's doubles pair Janice/Aldila are scheduled to face host pair Harriet Dart/Maia Lumsden in the first round on Thursday, July 2.
