TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto invited several Islamic community organizations to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The meeting discussed Indonesia's decision to join the Board of Peace and its impact on the Palestinian people's struggle.

Several leaders of Islamic organizations attended the meeting, including the Muhammadiyah Central Board, the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (NU), and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the President explained the reasons and considerations for joining the Board of Peace. He stated that the forum would provide a forum for conveying policy points so that they could be understood and accepted by various groups.

"I think this afternoon's meeting also provides an opportunity for the President to convey these points, hoping they can be understood by all parties," Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.

MUI Agrees on Peace Council: Fighting for the Ummah

The Indonesian Ulema Council expressed its support for President Prabowo Subianto's decision to bring Indonesia into the Board of Peace. This stance was conveyed by the Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Anwar Iskandar, after attending a meeting between Islamic organizations and the President at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

Anwar emphasized that the MUI's support is given as long as the move benefits the people and humanity. "As long as it's for the benefit, of course, because the MUI fights for the people, for the benefit of the nation, and for the benefit of humanity," Anwar said.

Minister of Religious Affairs Likens Prabowo's Move to the Treaty of Hudaibiyah

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar assessed that President Prabowo Subianto's decision to join the Board of Peace is reminiscent of the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, a peace agreement between the Prophet Muhammad and the Quraysh, who at that time ruled Mecca.

"What Mr. Prabowo did actually reminds us of the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, signed by the Prophet Muhammad," said Nasaruddin at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

The Treaty of Hudaibiyah established a 10-year ceasefire and paved the way for Muslims to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, although it initially raised doubts. Nasaruddin believes the agreement has actually proven to be beneficial.

He likened the situation to Indonesia's decision to join the Board of Peace, which was also accompanied by doubts from some parties regarding the benefits of the organization initiated by United States President Donald Trump.

Four Notes on Palestine

Deputy Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Cholil Nafis, said that Islamic leaders discussed with President Prabowo the benefits of the Board of Peace for Palestine. "We just discussed it, and the President explained why he joined the Board of Peace," Cholil said after the meeting at the Presidential Palace.

Cholil said the leaders conveyed several points. First, they agreed that colonialism must be abolished because it contradicts the values of humanity and justice. This principle, he said, is also affirmed in the Indonesian constitution.

Second, the figures emphasized the Muslim community's rejection of colonialism and murder, as they violate humanitarian values and religious teachings. Third, Cholil stated that the figures did not want Indonesian peacekeeping forces in Palestine to face Hamas or other forms of Palestinian resistance.

Fourth, the figures rejected any false peace. "We don't want just false peace while Palestine remains under occupation. We want a peaceful and independent Palestine," Cholil said.
