TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), Meutya Hafid, stated that providing Eid allowances for online ojek (ojol) or motorcycle taxi drivers needs to be governed by clear regulations.

Meutya made this statement after inter-ministerial discussions with the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Manpower regarding the status and rights of online transportation workers. "Basically, it needs to be regulated. If there are no regulations now, we all agree that there needs to be regulations," said Meutya after attending the IDE Katadata event at St. Regis Hotel, South Jakarta, Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

She revealed that the government is currently discussing the formulation of suitable regulations. The Ministry of Manpower, she said, will lead this discussion, while the Ministry of Communication and Digital will play a role in the aspects of technology and licensing for digital platforms.

"We have talked with the Minister of Transportation and Manpower Minister and will sit together to formulate good regulations. This regulation will also involve input from various parties, including online transportation service providers and the community of ojol drivers," she said.

Meutya indicated that the Ministry of Manpower will determine the timeline for completing these regulations. "Maybe the lead will be in the Ministry of Manpower, as there are many aspects of worker protection that need to be considered," she said.

The pressure to regulate ojol drivers' rights is growing stronger as demands for the welfare of workers in the digital economy sector increase. However, until now, there is no specific regulation on Eid allowances for those considered the app's driver-partners.

Previously, hundreds of online drivers planned to hold a rally in front of the Ministry of Manpower Office in Jakarta on Monday, February 17, 2025. The demonstration brought several demands related to the welfare of online drivers such as online ojek drivers, online taxi (taksol) drivers, and delivery couriers.

This was followed by a work strike. Online drivers staged a mass off-bid or application shutdown, preventing travel orders from being placed for a full day. One of the demands brought by this action was the certainty of Eid allowances from the platform companies that provide online transportation services.
