TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid said the preparation of regulations regarding the social media restrictions for children has entered its final stages and will be announced soon. This regulation aims to enhance digital space security for children in the country.
"It's already over 90 percent. So, we can officially formalize it soon," Meutya said in her speech at the Internet Security Day 2025 event at the Komdigi Office on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Meutya was tight-lipped about the details of the regulation. However, the regulation to be released by President Prabowo Subianto certainly contains adjustments to social media accounts for children. "The most important thing is to ensure that children cannot create their accounts until a certain age."
She claimed that this new regulation does not restrict children's access to the internet, but rather tends to give control to parents' permission. She also emphasized that there will be no sanctions for parents or children. "Sanctions will be imposed on Electronic System Providers (PSE) that violate these rules," Meutya said.
A categorization system for platforms accessible to children will also be introduced in this new Komdigi regulation. According to Meutya, PSEs with good child protection systems will be given leeway. Meanwhile, PSEs whose services pose high risks to children will be closely monitored.
"It's still being finalized, but the spirit is about categorization. So, it's not a blanket rule for all PSEs," she said.
The government had previously planned to restrict access to social media based on age as part of child protection. Komdigi issued a Decree forming a special team to study and prepare regulations on child protection. The team started working on February 3 and consists of representatives from ministries, academics, child education figures, Save The Children Indonesia organization, psychological institutions, and child protection agencies.
Maryamah, a lecturer in the Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology at Airlangga University (Unair), believes child protection regulations are urgent. Current internet access is a double-edged sword, as it provides education for the younger generation while also threatening their psychological and moral development.
"This decision (by Komdigi) is correct because children as the nation's future generation must be protected from harmful content," she said in a written statement on February 14.
