TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Agency reported that Mount Anak Krakatau erupted overnight into Saturday, September 5, 2026. The eruptions, spewing incandescent rocks and volcanic ash, have been ongoing since July 2, when the activity status of the volcano located in the Sunda Strait was raised to Alert Level III.
In a written statement distributed by the Agency, Mount Anak Krakatau experienced a continuous eruption accompanied by rumbling sounds. "As of today, September 5, 2026, at 4:40 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the eruption is still ongoing, and rumbling can still be heard from the Krakatau Pasauran PGA Post."
The height of the eruption column was not observed, but the bright red color of the eruption plume was clearly visible.
According to eruption information from the MAGMA Indonesia website, the Anak Krakatau eruption was recorded on seismographs since Friday morning, September 4, 2026, at 4:11 a.m. At that time, the seismograph recorded a maximum amplitude of 33 mm and a duration of 14 seconds.
Eruptions occurred again at 4:19, 4:28, and 5:46 that same morning, only with greater amplitude and slightly longer duration.
After that, there was a lull before another series of eruptions occurred that evening, starting at 10:03 p.m. Available data indicate six eruptions until 12:01 a.m. on Saturday.
"This eruption phenomenon resembles a 'lava fountain' that produces lava flows," read a statement from the Geological Agency, while emphasizing that continuous eruptions lasting several hours are common.
The Geological Agency also received public reports of booming sounds and vibrations across several areas of West Java, Banten, and Lampung, which are suspected to be related to the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, as they occurred at the same time.
The Geological Agency reported that the growth of Anak Krakatau's body after the December 22, 2018, eruption was still relatively small. "There is no potential for a collapse on a scale that could trigger a tsunami."
