TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anak Krakatau, a volcano in the Sunda Strait between Indonesia’s Java and Sumatra islands, erupted six times in succession from Monday morning to midday, spewing volcanic ash columns as high as 200 to 250 meters above its summit, according to the Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM).

The first eruption occurred at 9:41 a.m., producing an ash column 250 meters above the summit. It had a maximum amplitude of 52 millimeters and lasted for one minute and 17 seconds.

The second eruption followed two minutes later, at 9:43 a.m., producing another 250-meter-high ash column. It recorded an amplitude of 49 millimeters and lasted for 25 seconds.

Six Eruptions Recorded

The third eruption was recorded at 10:11 a.m., producing an ash column 200 meters above the summit with an amplitude of 53 millimeters.

The fourth eruption occurred at 10:24 a.m., sending an ash column 250 meters above the summit. It was followed by a fifth eruption at 10:48 a.m., which also produced an ash column 250 meters high.

The sixth eruption occurred at 11:22 a.m., sending an ash column 200 meters above the summit, or 357 meters above sea level. It recorded a maximum amplitude of 51 millimeters and lasted for 20 seconds.

“The eruption was still ongoing when this report was being prepared,” Lana said.

Anak Krakatau Remains on Alert Status

Lana emphasized that Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert status.

The Geological Agency has urged residents, visitors, tourists and hikers not to approach the volcano or conduct any activities within a three-kilometer radius of its active crater.
