TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The meeting of the college of cardinals to elect the new leader of Vatican Holy See has finally come to an end. American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new pope, after a puff of white smoke was seen coming out the chimney of the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
The new pope will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Quoting the New York Times, the white smoke signal indicates that the majority of the 133 cardinals attending the conclave have chosen the same name. The new Pope will be the successor to Pope Francis, leading the world's 1.4 billion Catholic observers.
From the live broadcast of Vatican News, St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City was filled with crowds. They are preparing to welcome the new Pope, who made first appearance on the balcony facing the square.
"Peace be with you," said Pope Leo XIV as he stepped onto the balcony, greeting the gathered masses in Italian, as quoted from CBS News.
The are more cardinals participating in the conclave than in the previous ones, both in 2005 and 2013, which were attended by 115 cardinals. The Archbishop of Jakarta, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, is one of the cardinals participating in this conclave. He did not participate in the previous conclave, as he was only ordained as a cardinal by Pope Francis on October 5, 2019.
The conclave was formalized in 1274 by Pope Gregory X in the Constitution Ubi Periculum, which stipulates that, in future elections, the cardinals must be sequestered in isolation, both from within and outside, so that they can focus on their task of choosing the next supreme leader of the Catholic Church without any political or personal interference.
