TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's West Java Regional Police are working to repatriate Reni Rahmawati, a suspected victim of human trafficking currently in Guangzhou, China. Reni is a resident of Cisaat Sub-district, Sukabumi Regency, West Java.
“Efforts are underway to bring Reni home and to uncover the network behind this suspected human trafficking syndicate,” said West Java Police Spokesperson Grand Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan in a written statement on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
According to police findings, the case began in April 2025 when Reni met two men, identified by the initials Y and JA, through social media. The men offered her a job as a domestic worker in China with a promised salary of Rp 15 million to Rp 30 million per month.
After securing her passport in Bogor with their assistance, Reni was instead confined in a house belonging to another individual, identified as A. During this time, Y and JA sought the help of a man with the initial L in Jakarta to arrange a marriage for Reni with a foreign national.
Reni was later forced into a secret marriage with a Chinese man via video call before being sent abroad. She has remained in Guangzhou since and has not returned to Indonesia.
Her family reported her disappearance to the police in September 2025, prompting an investigation that confirmed her whereabouts.
Hendra said police are now pursuing the case by tracing the roles of the perpetrators both in Indonesia and overseas, while coordinating with ministries and international institutions to ensure Reni’s safety.
“This case is of serious concern because it involves the dignity and protection of Indonesian citizens abroad,” Hendra stressed.
“The West Java Police will not stand idle. We are working with all relevant agencies to safeguard the victim and hold the perpetrators accountable.”
