TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are scheduled to meet at the second annual consultation forum between the two countries, likely to be held between August and the end of 2026.
The plan was conveyed by the Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan following the 17th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting between Indonesia and Malaysia in Jakarta on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
Mohamad mentioned that the planned meeting between the two leaders is an important continuation of the JCBC discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The forum also serves as a platform to align the strategic agenda of both countries in the future.
Results of JCBC Strengthen Bilateral Relations
According to Mohamad, the 17th JCBC produced several agreements that strengthen Indonesia and Malaysia's commitment to preserving and improving their long-standing relationship. He believes that the forum opens up broader opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.
"So, in general, our discussions today, during JCBC 17, have reached agreements that provide the possibility to enhance further the already existing relationship between Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia," he said.
The meeting was jointly chaired by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Mohamad Hasan, and was attended by delegations from various relevant institutions in Malaysia. Prior to that, the Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) was held to organize the agenda and review the progress of bilateral cooperation.
Prabowo-Anwar Meeting and Subsequent Agendas
Mohamad added that the Annual Consultation meeting between Prabowo and Anwar will be a continuation of the previous year's annual consultation held in Jakarta on July 29, 2025. The forum will also determine the direction of further discussions in the next consultation, which Malaysia plans to host.
"God willing, at the end of this year, both honorable leaders, President Prabowo and also Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, will hold an annual consultation event, which may be held between August and the end of the year, Insha Allah. Thank you," he said.
Economic Focus on Border Issues
JCBC 17 also emphasized strengthening economic cooperation amidst disruptions in the global supply chain. The two countries discussed efforts to enhance economic resilience, including in trade, energy, food, and strategic raw materials sectors.
In addition, the discussions included trade and investment facilitation, supply chain connectivity, halal industry, as well as maritime and land border issues. Other areas of cooperation, such as security, the environment, cross-border migration, and disaster mitigation, were also on the agenda.
