Prabowo Threatens to Fire Officials Resisting to Simplify Oil and Gas Rules

4 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has issued a stern warning, threatening to dismiss officials who are unwilling to simplify regulations in the oil and gas sector. This statement was made during the opening of the 49th Annual Convention of the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) 2025 at ICE BSD City, South Tangerang, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

In his address to Oil and Gas Cooperation Contractors (K3S), Prabowo revealed plans to offer dozens of oil and gas blocks for extensive exploration. He thus urged regulators to streamline the associated regulations.

According to him, Indonesia has a tendency to create regulations that, paradoxically, complicate matters.

"This needs to be reduced. Officials unwilling to simplify regulations will be replaced; I will dismiss them. Many young people are waiting for this opportunity," Prabowo declared in his speech.

He lamented that Indonesian officials are often trapped in a culture of making simple tasks difficult, thereby hindering the business world. He emphasized that government officials are regulators who serve society and need to deliver quick results.

"The world is changing. Those who are slow, those who are lazy, those who harbor strange thoughts must step aside, and we will sideline them; we will sideline those who do not work well," Prabowo asserted. "Simplify all processes, create the best possible climate for all parties who want to work, whether from abroad or within the country."

Prabowo has previously voiced concerns about complex regulations and bureaucracy. He once instructed his ministers that all technical regulations must receive presidential approval. This directive was conveyed during an audience with businessmen and investors at an economic discussion event at Menara Mandiri, Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The head of state desires a simpler and more efficient licensing process in his government. He expressed surprise that bureaucrats issue technical regulations despite existing presidential decisions. Moreover, he acknowledged that these technical regulations are often "stricter" than the presidential decrees themselves.

"No more technical regulations. Essentially, technical regulations issued by ministries must have the permission of the President of the Republic of Indonesia," Prabowo affirmed.
