TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Negotiations over trade tariffs between Indonesia and the United States have been pushed back to February 2026. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the final agreement is pending a meeting schedule between President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump.
Airlangga noted that the finalization of the deal has been rescheduled for February 2026. While the technical details of the final tariff plan are already prepared, the official signing remains on hold until the two heads of state can meet formally.
Realizing this meeting depends on synchronizing the leaders' respective schedules and agendas, which must be carefully aligned. "The schedules of both leaders must be taken into account; they also met recently in Davos," Airlangga said following a Central Inflation Control Team meeting in Jakarta on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Despite missing the initial target date, Airlangga emphasized that there are no significant obstacles hindering the negotiations. "It is simply a matter of scheduling," he remarked.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that the negotiation of US import tariff policies, originally slated for completion by the end of January 2026, has shifted to mid-February. "It may be in the second week of February," Prasetyo stated at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, as reported by Antara.
According to Prasetyo, this shift occurred due to timing adjustments and the need for a mutual meeting point rather than any substantive issues. He guaranteed that the core substance of the negotiations remains free of significant hurdles.
These trade negotiations were initiated after the US imposed a 32 percent additional tariff on Indonesian imports last April. Since then, the Indonesian government has actively lobbied for tariff reductions across several domestic commodities.
In July 2025, Trump reduced those additional tariffs to 19 percent following talks with Prabowo. However, the government continues to push for further reductions, specifically aiming for zero percent duties on commodities such as crude palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and rubber.
Airlangga had previously targeted the completion of these negotiations by the end of 2025. While Indonesia and the US were originally scheduled to sign the agreement in late January 2026, that target has now moved to mid-February.
