TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior journalist Hermien Yosephine Kleden passed away on late Monday, September 29, 2025, at 10:08 p.m. local time in Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital, Jakarta.
Hermien's brother, Emil Kleden, confirmed her passing. "Yes. Hermien has returned to her eternal home at 10:08 p.m.," Emil told Tempo on Monday.
Hermien's passing was also reported by the Central Board of the Indonesian Catholic Scholars' Association (PP ISKA), where she served as the Foreign Relations Presidium. 'The Indonesian Catholic Scholars' Association conveys our deepest condolences on the passing of Hermien Y. Kleden,' wrote PP ISKA via the @pp.iska Instagram account on Monday.
Hermien Kleden was a seasoned journalist with a decades-long career. She graduated from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Gadjah Mada University.
Quoting the book Jejak Jurnalis Perempuan (2012) published by the Independent Journalists Alliance, Hermien kicked off her career as a journalist in 1987, by working as a contributor for a France-based international magazine.
Hermien also served as the Executive Deputy Editor of Tempo Magazine and the Editor-in-Chief of Tempo English Magazine. She also held a position as a member of the Executive Board of Tempo Media Group.
For her contribution to journalism, Hermien was awarded the SK Trimurti award from the Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) in 2009. Throughout her career as a journalist, she has explored at least 30 countries around the world.
