TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck southern Philippines earlier this week has risen to 61, authorities said on Saturday, as rescue teams continued operations in the hardest-hit areas of Mindanao.
The Philippines' Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the number of fatalities increased after additional bodies were recovered from affected areas.
According to GMA News, 33 people remain missing, while 1,221 others have been injured.
Search, rescue, and evacuation operations are still underway as emergency responders continue to look for survivors and evacuate residents trapped by landslides and collapsed buildings, authorities said.
The Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) reported that the earthquake affected more than 553,000 people across Mindanao.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that about 9,393 people are staying in evacuation centers, while another 54,274 have sought temporary shelter with relatives and friends outside official evacuation facilities.
Preliminary damage assessments showed that 8,865 houses were destroyed and 36,691 others sustained partial damage.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by aftershocks, unstable structures, and damaged roads, making it difficult for aid workers to reach some affected communities.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao earlier this week, triggering widespread panic and causing extensive damage to homes, schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure.
General Santos City and parts of Sarangani Province were among the hardest-hit areas, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency to accelerate relief and recovery efforts.
