TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok has denied rumors that Tokopedia will be shut down and merged into TikTok Shop, stressing that the e-commerce platform will continue operating independently. A TikTok spokesperson said the company remains committed to investing in Tokopedia and Indonesia.

“Tokopedia will continue to operate fully and focus on improving the user and buyer experience to drive long-term growth,” the spokesperson said in a statement received by Tempo on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Speculation about Tokopedia’s alleged closure began circulating on social media after a post by the X account @ecommurz claimed that TikTok Shop would launch as a separate standalone application.

“Information from friends at Tokopedia says they will shut down the Tokopedia application and TikTok Shop will have its own separate application,” the account wrote on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Tokopedia’s partnership with TikTok was formed following Indonesia’s ban on social commerce practices, which prohibit e-commerce activities integrated directly with social media platforms such as TikTok Shop.

On December 10, 2023, coinciding with National Online Shopping Day, TikTok and Tokopedia signed a share acquisition agreement.

Tokopedia divested 75.01% of its shares worth US$840 million, equivalent to Rp13.69 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,294 per US dollar), to the Chinese technology giant. Meanwhile, the remaining 24.99% of shares are still owned by PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO).

In collaboration with Tokopedia, TikTok has committed to gradually invest more than US$ 1.5 billion, or approximately Rp4.44 trillion. This plan is followed by the transfer of ownership and operational rights of TikTok Shop in Indonesia worth US$340 million, or equivalent to Rp5.64 trillion, to Tokopedia.
