Tourist Visits to Israel Drop by 90% Since Gaza Conflict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel has reported an "unprecedented fall" in tourism revenue, with $3.4 billion losses since the Gaza genocide in October 2023.

Figures released by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism indicate that the arrival of foreign tourists has decreased by over 90 percent since the start of the Gaza genocide.

According to the public broadcaster KAN, as cited by Anadolu on Wednesday, direct and indirect losses in the tourism sector have exceeded 12 billion shekels.

Israeli officials attribute this sharp decline to the nearly total cessation of air traffic and the lack of security and stability within the country.

The Israel Hotel Association stated that hotel occupancy rates have dropped by 10 percent in some areas, calling it a "historic levels" compared to the 80 percent occupancy in previous years.

“Rebuilding trust within the global market may take a long time and double promotional efforts,” the association said.

Dozens of international airlines have suspended flights to Israel amid increased regional tensions over Israel's genocidal war in Gaza.

The Israeli military continues to launch brutal attacks in the Gaza Strip, killing over 52,900 Palestinians since October 2023, most of whom are women and children.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
