TEMPO.CO, Jakarta On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose sweeping 50% tariffs on any nation supplying military weapons to Iran. Delivered via a Social Truth post, the statement came just a day after a two-week ceasefire agreement, which Trump described as a “very productive regime change.”

“A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions! President DJT.”

However, as reported by Al Jazeera, the announcement did not specify the legal authority Trump would use to enforce such tariffs. This raises questions, especially after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down his previous use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) in February which prompted an order to refund some of the year-long bulk collected from tariffs.

Despite the setback, the White House has rebuilt its tariff system by relying on existing trade laws such as Section 301 investigations, as CNBC noted. The framework allows the administration to maintain aggressive trade measures while staying within clearer legal boundaries.

According to Yahoo! Finance, the latest announcement follows a series of tariff adjustments introduced just last week on metals and pharmaceuticals. Although tariffs on metals were set at 50% and on their derivatives at 25%, the Trump administration is also revising how these tariffs are applied, which could potentially result in higher import duties for importers.
