TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he requested Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reduce military strikes on Lebanon. The appeal comes as the escalating attacks threaten to derail a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

During the two-week truce announced in Washington on Tuesday night, the U.S. and Iran are scheduled to convene talks in Pakistan on Friday, April 10, 2026, aimed at ending the broader conflict in West Asia.

"I spoke with Bibi and he’s going to low-key it. I just think we have to be sort of a little more low-key," Trump said, as reported by The Hill.

"Netanyahu is going to be fine. He’s going to low-key a little bit. He’s got a problem with Hezbollah. He’s going to low-key a little bit, but he’s going to be absolutely fine," Trump told Israeli journalist Neria Kraus during a phone interview on Thursday.

Trump also expressed that he is optimistic regarding the potential for a formal peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran.

The President echoed the recent rhetoric of Vice President JD Vance. He told reporters traveling with him on his return from Hungary on Wednesday that Israel should exercise some restraint in its military campaign in Lebanon.

Debate Over Ceasefire Includes Lebanon

Both Iran and Pakistan, acting as mediators for the U.S.-Iran truce, stated that the two-week ceasefire agreement includes the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

However, Israel carried out its largest-scale offensive to date during strikes on Wednesday, hitting over 100 locations within 10 minutes, a move that prompted Iran to respond by closing the Strait of Hormuz. At least 254 people were killed, adding to the thousands of Lebanese citizens who have perished in Israel's military operations within a single day.

Trump maintained that the cessation of Israeli attacks in Lebanon was not explicitly part of the agreement with Iran due to the presence of the Hezbollah movement. Conversely, Iran views the ongoing strikes as a direct violation of the ceasefire reached with Washington.

Previously, Netanyahu stated that he had instructed the Israeli cabinet to initiate direct negotiations with Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah and establish peace between the two nations.

On Tuesday night, Trump announced the two-week ceasefire with Iran, contingent on Tehran’s agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the announcement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed that Tehran would begin diplomatic talks with the U.S. in Islamabad on Friday, April 10, 2026.

This ceasefire marks a positive development following the recent surge in West Asian conflict, which was triggered by a joint U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran on February 28.

In response, Iran targeted Israeli territory and several U.S. military facilities in the Middle East. Tehran also restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, causing severe supply disruptions and a surge in global energy prices.
