TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has teamed up with NVIDIA and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to develop research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This collaboration focuses on strengthening infrastructure, integrating academic research with industry needs, and developing the national AI ecosystem.

This collaboration is part of the UGM AI Center of Excellence program, which focuses on developing AI for academic, research, and community empowerment purposes.

The Head of UGM Digital Transformation Bureau, Mardhani Riasetiawan, said that this collaboration is aimed at building open, accessible, and sustainable AI infrastructure, as well as supporting the national agenda for AI development. "This initiative is an important step for broader AI development," said Mardhani in a written statement on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Mardhani mentioned that UGM offers several outstanding research fields, including AI for medical, energy, and resource utilization, as well as smart technology. In the healthcare sector, AI is considered capable of expediting the diagnosis process and improving the accuracy of medical data analysis.

As part of the collaboration, UGM and NVIDIA are preparing infrastructure in the form of a DGX Station, a high-performance AI supercomputer workstation. This device will be placed at the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of UGM to support AI-based computing activities. "This infrastructure serves as a means to support optimal collaboration between academics, industry, and the government," said Mardhani.

AI researcher in the medical field at the Faculty of Medicine UGM, Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra, said that the use of AI greatly helps in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the limitations of computing infrastructure constrain further development. "The ability to use AI in the medical world is limited because we lack adequate infrastructure," he said.

Through partnerships with NVIDIA and Indosat, UGM plans to establish national connectivity to upload data to centralized servers for analysis and use in various AI developments, including medical applications. Indosat plays a role in providing large-scale data network connectivity support.

The Senior Regional Manager of NVIDIA AI Technology Center, Ng Aik Beng, said that collaborations in the healthcare sector are not only carried out with UGM, but also with Monash University in Australia. He emphasized the importance of training, consultation, and strengthening industrial capacity to be ready for mature AI adoption.

According to him, NVIDIA has developed various AI frameworks to support implementation in various sectors. In the healthcare sector, NVIDIA developed MONAI, an open-source framework for AI applications in medical imaging. This platform provides comprehensive pipelines ranging from data annotation, model training, 3D segmentation, such as CT scans and MRIs, to implementation in hospitals. MONAI also supports federated learning to protect patient data privacy.

In addition, NVIDIA developed Metropolis, a computer vision-based framework for smart city applications and video analytics. This platform enables large-scale video processing with low latency as well as automatic analysis, such as object detection and activity monitoring.

Timothy Liu, NVIDIA Solutions Architect, added that the company not only produces GPUs (graphics processing units) but also provides software, software development kits, libraries, developer ecosystems, and educational programs to accelerate AI experimentation and productivity.

NVIDIA is a global technology company that focuses on GPU development and accelerated computing, which has now become the backbone of AI developments worldwide. Through this collaboration, UGM hopes to strengthen research capacity and accelerate the adoption of AI technology at the national level.
