TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso expressed confidence that the signing of the Indonesia–Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) will unlock wider market access and strengthen economic ties between the two nations.
“The Indonesia–Canada CEPA marks a new chapter in the economic relationship of both countries,” Budi said in a press release on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
The agreement was officially signed in Ottawa on Wednesday, September 24, by Budi Santoso and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with President Prabowo Subianto witnessing the event.
According to Budi, the partnership provides tariff preferences for more than 6,573 Indonesian products, accounting for over 90 percent of the country’s tariff lines in the Canadian market.
Several commodities, such as processed foods, marine products, natural fiber crafts, household appliances, granite, and marble, will enjoy zero percent tariffs once the agreement takes effect.
Budi added that the CEPA will enhance the competitiveness of key Indonesian exports such as textiles, footwear, furniture, processed foods, light electronics, automotive electronics, and swiftlet’s nests in Canada.
Trade between Indonesia and Canada has shown strong growth ahead of the partnership. The Ministry of Trade reported that bilateral trade reached US$2.72 billion between January and July 2025, a 30 percent increase compared to US$2.09 billion in the same period last year.
Indonesia’s exports during that period stood at US$1.01 billion, while imports from Canada totaled US$1.71 billion. The country’s main export products included natural rubber, footwear, cocoa, butter and vegetable oils, and textiles.
On the other hand, Canada’s primary exports to Indonesia were wheat, fertilizers, soybeans, chemical wood pulp, and gold.
