TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One type of Indonesian coffee always captures the world's attention during the celebration of International Coffee Day on October 1: kopi luwak (civet coffee). It is famous not only for its unique and exotic taste, but also for its exorbitant price.

Compared to other types of coffee, kopi luwak is notoriously expensive. According to Luxhabitat data, the price of kopi luwak reaches US$160 (Rp2.65 million) per pound (0.45 kilograms), ranking sixth highest in the world. The most expensive coffee, according to the same source, is Panama Geisha Coffee from Elida Estate, Panama, priced at US$4,150 (Rp68.9 million) per pound.

However, Cozymeal provides different data. The site states that kopi luwak can be valued at US$700 or (Rp11.6 million) per pound of coffee beans.

Kopi luwak is favored for its delicate, smooth taste with hints of sweetness, fruit, chocolate, and earthy undertones. Its aroma is fragrant with a luxurious, clean aftertaste. The flavor is influenced by the type of beans, the civet's health, the natural fermentation process, as well as roasting and brewing techniques.

The Reasons Behind the Expensive Price of 'Kopi Luwak'

The high price of kopi luwak is mainly influenced by its traditional production methods. This process demands a considerable amount of time and effort, as the farmers must search for suitable coffee beans in plantations and forests.

The quantity of coffee beans found is also very limited. Given that this method cannot yet be substituted by machines or automated processes, it's no wonder that this search process requires patience, time, and extra effort. Therefore, gathering enough coffee beans to produce kopi luwak is a truly demanding task that requires perseverance and hard work.

Because of its high price, kopi luwak is typically enjoyed by premium coffee connoisseurs, as well as local and international tourists seeking a unique and exclusive coffee experience with cultural significance. This beverage is also often seen as a symbol of luxury and is considered more stomach-friendly due to its relatively low caffeine content.

The demand for kopi luwak is also high. At a global level, the largest demand comes from Japan, the United States, and European countries. While domestically, the tourism sector is a highly potential market, especially in Bali.
