While there is no single global authority that officially determines the exact start of each season, June 21 is widely recognized as the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
Bringing the longest day of the year, the summer solstice has long been celebrated through seasonal festivals, cultural traditions, and midsummer gatherings that honor the extended daylight and changing season.

What is the summer solstice?

The summer solstice takes place when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most directly toward the sun, causing the sun to appear at its highest point in the sky and bringing the longest period of daylight of the year.
This annual event occurs because Earth rotates on an axis tilted by about 23.5 degrees rather than orbiting the sun completely upright.
The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol, meaning “sun,” and sistere, meaning “to stand still,” referring to the point when the sun appears to pause before reversing its path across the sky.
What happens during the summer solstice?
Because the astronomical year lasts roughly 365.25 days, the summer solstice does not fall on the exact same date annually and currently shifts between June 20 and June 22.
Daylight hours during the solstice also vary significantly by latitude. Regions near the equator experience about 12 hours of daylight year-round, while mid-northern areas can receive around 15 hours of sunlight.
How do I get to the Stonehenge summer solstice celebration?
Built around 2500 BC, Stonehenge was carefully designed to align with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. During the summer solstice, the sun rises behind the monument’s famous Heel Stone, with the first rays of light shining directly into the center of the ancient stone circle.
For this year’s solstice gathering, visitors can access the site free of charge from 19:00 on June 20 until 08:30 on June 21. Travelers arriving by rail can use services from Salisbury station, located around 12 miles (19 kilometers) away, with special bus routes operated by Salisbury Reds heading to the monument.
Are there any tips to know about the Stonehenge summer solstice?
Visitors attending the solstice gathering are advised to wear sturdy footwear and bring warm, waterproof clothing due to changing outdoor conditions.
Small torches and blankets are recommended for comfort during the overnight event, although large umbrellas and oversized bags will not be permitted on site.
Organisers have also prohibited items such as sleeping bags, duvets, tents, amplified music equipment, alcohol, and drones. Except for registered assistance dogs, pets are not allowed at the event.
