TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AFTER backing Anies Baswedan in the 2024 presidential election, the National Democrat (NasDem) Party continues to face the political fallout. The party has declared its support for the administration of Prabowo Subianto, but it holds no seats in the cabinet. The business interests of NasDem General Chair Surya Paloh have also been affected.
Amid this political climate, reports have surfaced of maneuvers to take over NasDem. The idea reportedly emerged during a meeting between Surya and President Prabowo Subianto at Hambalang, Bogor, West Java. A minister in the Red and White Cabinet also explored the possibility of managing the party, known for its “Restoration of Indonesia” slogan.
Contacted via text message and through his associates, Surya declined a request for an interview. Two NasDem officials conveyed his message to Tempo, saying that now is not the right time for him to to respond to media questions.
Responses instead came from NasDem Party Chair Sugeng Suparwoto on Friday, April 10, 2026. The NasDem politician, who led the party’s election campaign in Central Java, said there is no internal turmoil within the party, including any attempt to take it over. “Pak Surya remains the ideal figure to lead NasDem,” he said.
What is NasDem’s position toward the Prabowo Subianto administration?
We are not part of the cabinet, even though we are in the coalition. Ethically, NasDem feels it has no moral right to sit in the cabinet because we did not support Prabowo from the beginning. The parties that backed him from the start have a stronger claim. We respect the cabinet formation carried out by Prabowo.
