TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel has agreed to halt airstrikes on Iran at the request of United States President Donald Trump. However, a senior Israeli official stated on Monday, June 8, 2026, that they would continue their attacks in Lebanon 'at full force.'
“At Trump's request, we are halting strikes on Iran,” the official said in a statement published by the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, as reported by Anadolu.
"We are continuing in Lebanon at full force according to the equation that if they fire toward the settlements - we will strike in Dahieh” in Beirut.
The official stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's conversation with Trump over the phone “was overall good.”
Israel's public broadcaster, KAN, cited an unnamed Israeli official, who also said that the military “will cease fire in Iran, but not in southern Lebanon."
The Iranian military stated on Monday morning that they would halt attacks on Israel. However, Tehran warned of a "crushing" response if Israel's attacks on Lebanon continue.
Tensions escalated on Sunday when Israel bombarded the Lebanese capital, Beirut, despite a ceasefire being in place. This prompted Iran to launch missiles at northern Israel in retaliation on Sunday night. Israel then carried out several waves of airstrikes on Iran.
Israel's attacks on Lebanon have resulted in more than 3,600 deaths, over 11,000 injuries, and caused over 1.6 million people to flee since March 2, according to Lebanese officials.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday morning, Trump called on Israel and Iran to halt the fighting immediately following their retaliatory airstrikes.
The West Asian (Middle Eastern) region has been in a state of tension since the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran in late February. This triggered Iran's retaliation against Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.
A temporary ceasefire was reached on April 8, but negotiations later stalled amid disputes over its implementation and further regional developments.
