TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Almost every day, Dimas Bagus Arya Saputra has kept watch at the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta. The coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) has been accompanying his deputy, Andrie Yunus, who was attacked with acid on Thursday night, March 12, 2026. Police identified the perpetrators as personnel from the Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais) of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
On the ninth floor, where Andrie is being treated, Dimas, while coordinating with various civil society groups, has also helped restrict visitors. He even turned away Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who had wanted to visit. “The doctor said that, aside from family members and KontraS staff, no one is allowed to meet the patient,” Dimas said at Tempo’s office in South Jakarta on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
For Dimas, Andrie is not merely a colleague, but also a close friend. When the KontraS office in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, was repeatedly visited by soldiers during deliberations over revisions to the TNI Law in March 2025, the two went into hiding together. They moved between several safe houses for about a week.
Speaking with Tempo journalists Yosea Arga and Stefanus Pramono, Dimas recounted the moments immediately after the attack. The graduate of the Faculty of Law at Airlangga University in Surabaya also laid out the findings of the Advocacy Team for Democracy, which gathered evidence related to the assault. In the nearly two-hour interview, he also explained KontraS’s relationship with the military.
On the third floor of the Tempo building, Dimas looked at a photograph of KontraS founder and first coordinator Munir Said Thalib. Munir was killed by poisoning aboard a flight bound for the Netherlands on September 7, 2004. Dimas said he does not expect to match Munir’s stature. He only wants to work in the same place as his predecessor. “No one can be like Cak Munir,” he said.

Andrie was doused with acid at around 11:30pm. That night, despite the pain, he went straight to the KontraS dormitory. Two staff members who were there took him to RSCM. Another informed our WhatsApp group. I immediately went to RSCM and stayed with him in the decontamination room.
