TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Austria has rejected the United States' request to use its airspace for launching military operations against Iran, citing the country's law of neutrality.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Austrian Ministry of Defense confirmed the existence of several requests from Washington but did not specify the exact number, as reported by the Austrian public broadcaster, ORF, as cited by Anadolu.

Austria, which has long upheld its policy of military neutrality, has not imposed a general ban on US flights. However, Vienna is reviewing the requests on a case-by-case basis, according to the ministry.

The opposition Social Democratic Party (SPO) has also called on the government to maintain its current stance.

“Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (OVP) should not approve a single further US military flight to the Gulf. Nor should she approve any transport flights or other logistical support," said Sven Hergovich, the head of SPO in Lower Austria.

"Just as Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland are doing. This war is damaging Austrian economic interests, Europe as a whole, and world peace," he added.

Earlier this week, Spain reportedly closed its airspace to military flights related to the conflict, while Italy rejected a US aircraft's request to land at a base in Sicily. Trump also acknowledged that France had closed its airspace to US military flights to the Middle East.

The US and Israel have conducted air strikes against Iran since February 28, 2026. The attacks resulted in more than 1,900 casualties, including the then Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets—resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and disrupting the global market and air travel.
