TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since 2007, millions of people around the world have participated in Earth Hour by turning off their lights for an hour. Earth Hour is a global movement that invites individuals, communities, businesses, and governments worldwide to symbolically contribute to climate change mitigation by switching off lights and electronic devices for 1 hour from 20:30 to 21:30 local time, every Saturday in the last week of March every year. However, as reported by earthhour.org, the movement has evolved further. It's not just about 'switch off,' but also 'Give an Hour for Earth'-give one hour to do something positive for our planet.
Anyone, anywhere, can participate. Just spend 60 minutes doing something impactful. Here are some ideas you can do:
1. Feel the Natural Energy through Fitness & Wellness Activities
Utilize nature as a source of energy for your body and mind. Try jogging, beach yoga, or meditating under the trees. Every mindful moment you spend outdoors will strengthen your connection with nature and cultivate a desire to protect it.
2. Plan Fun Outdoor Adventures
Protecting the earth is important, but sometimes we need to be reminded why we should do it. You can spend an hour for light hiking, picnicking in nature, or exploring natural places. These enjoyable experiences will reignite your love for the earth.
3. Choose Walking or Cycling
Transportation is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution. The good news is, you can help reduce its impact in a simple way. Interestingly, walking 1.5 kilometers produces 75% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than driving a car. Aside from being environmentally friendly, activities like walking or cycling also improve mood, maintain health, and help to live longer.
4. Find Serenity through Nature Meditation
Take a moment to truly connect with nature. You can find a peaceful natural place, sit comfortably, close your eyes, and start breathing slowly. You can feel the sound of the wind, the touch of the grass or sand, and the calmness around you. Over time, you will feel more connected to the earth and more aware of the surrounding environment.
Giving an hour for the earth, like Earth Hour, can be a reminder to increase awareness of the issue of climate change. Bank BCA joined the movement by turning off lights and non-essential electronic equipment in BCA operational buildings and branches in various regions of Indonesia, from 20:30 to 21:30 local time on March 28, 2026. BCA's EVP Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility, Hera F. Haryn, revealed that her team's participation in Earth Hour is an effort to implement environmental, social, and governance (ESG) values. Hera said that this simple action holds a strong meaning in increasing awareness of the urgent need to address global climate change through energy conservation.
"BCA's participation in Earth Hour is not just an annual action, but a real step in supporting energy resilience and anticipating climate change. We hope that this contribution will be followed by many parties with the same awareness to preserve our planet," Hera said in a statement received by Tempo.
Aston Inn Lumajang, East Java, also took part in the global Earth Hour campaign for a better earth as a commitment to environmental sustainability. "During the main hour (20:30-21:30 WIB), the hotel turned off some lights and electricity usage as a symbol of concern for climate change and earth preservation," said Aston Inn Lumajang's Public Relations Manager, Aden D. Kusuma, as quoted by Antara.
No grand gestures are needed to make a change. If everyone contributes just one hour, the impact can be tremendous. Start with small actions, be consistent, and be a part of the global movement to protect the earth.
