TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesians have more confidence in President Prabowo Subianto than in observers, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, claiming that they tend to fearmonger about the country's conditions.
These observers have long been "attempting to sway and shape public opinion, even before Pak Prabowo became president," Teddy said late Friday at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Teddy claimed there was an uptick in observers, who often convey inaccurate data, referring to the phenomenon as an "observer inflation."
Nevertheless, Teddy is confident that citizens trust the government more than the observers. "These observers may have influenced the citizens, but what's the reality? The reality is, more than 96 million citizens believe in Pak Prabowo. They don't believe them. This is tangible evidence of public confidence, not an assumption," he said.
The cabinet secretary acknowledged dissent and criticisms, but warned against making "statements that lead to public anxiety."
He also maintained that the situation across Indonesia remains "completely stable, completely under control."
According to him, everyone should have hope and good prayers for the country. "Let's not be the people who instead encourage others to have bad hopes and prayers for the nation we love," he said.
President Prabowo previously accused a number of observers of being unpatriotic and gained financial benefits by criticizing the government.
Prabowo cited different kinds of observers in Indonesia, one of which is those who criticize the government with hidden motives.
Prabowo stated that he regularly receives intel about observers who dislike the government. From these reports, he claimed to know their financial backers.
Prabowo said he's trying to exhaust persuasive means to address what he claimed are the observers' financial backers. "But there will come a time to crack down on this behavior," he pledged during a cabinet meeting in mid-March.
