TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Traffic on the Cikopo–Palimanan (Cipali) toll road in Cirebon, West Java, heading toward Jakarta rose sharply by 161.5 percent on Monday morning, March 23, following the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday, compared with the same period a day earlier.
Astra Tol Cipali’s Head of Sustainability Management and Corporate Communications, Ardam Rafif Trisilo, said the spike in traffic indicated that the annual post-Eid return flow, known in Indonesia as arus balik, had begun.
“The increase in traffic volume toward Jakarta indicates that the post-Eid return flow has started,” Ardam said in a statement issued in Cirebon on Monday.
He said that between midnight and 09:00 AM local time, around 13,000 vehicles were recorded traveling from Cikopo toward Jakarta.
“That figure represents a 161.5 percent increase compared with traffic volume during the same period a day earlier,” Ardam said.
Meanwhile, traffic heading in the opposite direction, from Cikopo toward Cirebon, reached around 12,000 vehicles during the same period. According to Ardam, that number was down about 36.3 percent from the same time on the previous day.
“Traffic heading toward Cirebon has started to ease compared with the previous day,” he said.
Overall, traffic volume on the Cipali toll road rose by about 4.2 percent compared with the same period on Sunday, March 22, he added.
Ardam said traffic conditions in both directions on the Cipali toll road remained busy but generally smooth.
The toll road operator also urged motorists to take breaks at rest areas if they feel tired or drowsy.
If rest areas are full, he said, drivers may exit at the nearest toll gate to rest without incurring additional charges, as the toll road uses a closed transaction system.
The Cipali toll road has several rest areas, including at kilometer markers 86, 102, 130A, and 166 for traffic heading toward Cirebon, and at KM 164, 130B, 101, as well as a temporary functional rest area at KM 77 for traffic heading toward Jakarta.
