Fact Check: Did Bahlil Cut Pertamax Fuel Prices to Rp10,500 Per Liter?

6 hours ago 25

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta At least 20 posts on Instagram [archive], Facebook, Threads, and X claim that the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, will officially lower the price of Pertamax RON 92 to Rp10,500 per liter in mid-June 2026. The government is accused of lowering the fuel price after global oil prices plummeted following the peace agreement between Iran and the United States.

However, is it true that the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources announced a fuel price reduction in mid-June 2026?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content by comparing it to credible news reports, official press releases, and image searches. The results indicate that the government has not yet lowered the price of non-subsidized fuel. The price of Pertamax RON 92 has actually increased since June 10, 2026.

As reported by Tempo, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga raised the prices of two types of non-subsidized fuel starting June 10, 2026. Pertamax (RON 92) rose from Rp12,300 to Rp16,250 per liter, while Pertamax Green 95 (RON 95) jumped from Rp12,900 to Rp17,000 per liter.

Retail prices on the PT Pertamina Patra Niaga website also display the latest prices as of June 10, 2026. The retail price of Pertamax (RON 92) varies by province. In the Java-Bali region, Pertamax is sold for Rp16,250 per liter, while in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan it reaches Rp17,000 per liter. Meanwhile, Pertamax Green 95, priced at Rp17,000 per liter, is only available on the island of Java. To date, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has not announced a price reduction for this non-subsidized fuel.

The photo used in the circulating post actually shows Minister Bahlil announcing the fuel price increase at the Presidential Palace Complex on Thursday evening, June 11, 2026. In a Tempo TV broadcast, Bahlil explained that the decision to raise the price of Pertamax had been made through calculations by state-owned and private companies. "Meanwhile, the non-subsidized price is adjusted to the existing market price," Bahlil said at the time.

A Satire on the Cabinet Secretariat's Statement

This false narrative is believed to have emerged as a satire aimed at criticizing the statement by the Cabinet Secretariat (Setkab), led by Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya. Through its official Instagram account, the Setkab stated that the non-subsidized fuel price increase, outside of the regular schedule, was necessary to keep pace with fluctuations in global oil prices.

In mid-June 2026, global oil prices began to decline after Iran and the United States agreed to end tensions. The BBC reported that Brent crude prices fell 4.3 percent to US$83.55 per barrel. Oil sold by the United States also fell 4.9 percent to US$80.74 per barrel on June 15, 2026.

As reported by Bloomberg Technoz, Moshe Rizal, Investment Committee Member of the Oil and Gas Companies Association (Aspermigas), explained that there is now ample room for a price reduction for Pertamax RON 92 after the Iran-US peace deal. He stated that the previous 32 percent increase was reasonable when global oil prices reached US$100 per barrel. However, when prices fall below US$80 per barrel, the reduction now depends on the government's political will to assign Pertamina.

Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth MV Dumatubun, neither confirmed nor denied the idea. He explained that the evaluation of non-subsidized fuel prices is carried out routinely every month, taking into account oil prices, economic value, and government policy. "Non-subsidized fuels like the Pertamax series are products whose selling prices are adjusted to evolving market conditions and economic factors that influence energy procurement costs," said Roberth on Thursday, June 18, 2026.

CONCLUSION

Tempo's verification concluded that the narrative that Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced a price reduction of Pertamax (RON 92) to Rp10,500 per liter is false.
