TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim is scheduled to undergo the first appeal hearing regarding the Chromebook procurement case at the DKI Jakarta High Court on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Nadiem Makarim's lawyer, Zaid Mushafi, stated that in the submitted appeal brief, his team challenges various judicial considerations raised in the ruling on the Chromebook case that implicated his client.
"In this appeal petition, we ask the High Court panel of judges to rehear the case and re-examine the facts that formed the basis of the judgment at the court of first instance," said Zaid after submitting the appeal brief.
He highlighted one of the contested judicial considerations: the granting of a power of attorney to a third party regarding the management of Nadiem's shares in PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (AKAB) and PT Gojek Indonesia.
It is not only Nadiem who is appealing; the Attorney General's Office (AGO) has also decided to appeal the Corruption Court's ruling, which sentenced Nadiem to 10 years in prison for corruption in the Chromebook procurement case.
One of the factors the AGO will consider in its appeal brief is the house arrest status Nadiem is currently serving.
In the corruption case involving the 2019–2022 education digitalization program—specifically the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) systems within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology—Nadiem was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of corruption.
In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a fine of Rp1 billion (or serve an additional 190 days in prison in default) and pay restitution of Rp809.59 billion (or serve an additional 5 years in prison in default).
The restitution order was imposed after Nadiem was proven to have received Rp809.59 billion from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) via PT Gojek Indonesia. A significant portion of PT AKAB's funds originated from a US$786.99 million investment by Google. In that case, Nadiem was proven to have abused his authority, resulting in a financial loss to the state amounting to Rp1.56 trillion.
The corruption involved, among other things, the procurement of information and communication technology-based learning equipment—specifically Chromebook laptops and CDMs—for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years in a manner inconsistent with procurement planning and established procurement principles.
The actions of the founder of the technology company were determined to have been committed—among others—in collusion with three other defendants who had already been convicted in separate trials (Ibrahim Arief, alias Ibam; Mulyatsyah; and Sri Wahyuningsih) as well as Jurist Tan, who remains a fugitive.
Consequently, Nadiem Makarim was found guilty of violating the criminal provisions set forth in Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Crimes—as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of 2001—in conjunction with Article 55, Paragraph (1), Item 1 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).
