Indonesia Forms Task Force to Tackle Illegal Oil Drilling

8 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim Polri), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), and SKK Migas have formed a Joint Task Force to tackle illegal oil drilling. This new task force will focus on enforcing the law against oil drilling violations.

"This task force will operate in accordance with the orders of the leaders, from ESDM, SKK Migas, and will later coordinate with the leader of the Indonesian National Police," said Brigadier General Mohammad Irhamni, Director of Specific Criminal Acts at Bareskrim, at the Bareskrim Polri building on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Irhamni stated that this task force will regulate illegal oil drilling activities in the regions of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Bareskrim, together with the Ministry of ESDM and SKK Migas, has conducted a focus group discussion to map out the issues of illegal oil drilling. According to him, the effort to form the task force also responds to the high global oil prices due to conflicts in the Middle East.

Rudy Sufahriadi, special staff to the Minister of ESDM, stated that Pertamina will purchase community oil fields. Therefore, there should be no illegal activities as long as there is a joint work agreement with Pertamina or other legitimate companies.

"It can be bought by Pertamina, and later Medco (energy company) can also be involved, and becomes no longer illegal provided that there is already a cooperation agreement and the wells are determined," said Rudy, who is also appointed as the Chairman of the Illegal Drilling Task Force.

The Head of SKK Migas, Djoko Siswanto, stated that the Illegal Drilling Task Force will also regulate illegal oil refineries, illegal oil distribution, and illegal oil trading. "So it must be sold, legal oil, which has obtained permission from Pertamina and other third parties such as Medco. Anything outside of that will be regulated," he said.
