Indonesian Climbing Team Heads to China for Asian Games Spots

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A total of 22 Indonesian rock climbing team officials, coaches, and athletes have departed from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, for China to participate in the 2026 World Climbing Asia Championship Meisan.

"We're already on the plane, departure at 10:50 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and scheduled to arrive at 5:50 AM local time," said Wahyu Pristiawan Buntoro, Head of the Delegation and Manager of the Indonesian National Climbing Training Team, when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Sunday evening.

He explained that a total of 16 athletes are departing, consisting of nine climbers for the speed discipline and seven for the lead and boulder events.

He further explained that upon arrival in Meisan City on Monday morning, the entire delegation will head directly to their hotel to rest.

The coach of the Indonesian speed climbing team, Galar Pandu Asmoro, added that all athletes will rest fully to recover from the long journey.

"We're still adapting to the weather and conditions here, so please support us," he said.

The Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (PP FPTI) is sending a total of 16 athletes to compete in the World Climbing Asia Championship Meisan 2026 in China, from April 7-12.

The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan in September.

To qualify for the Asian Games, male and female speed athletes must finish in the top eight. For the lead and bouldering disciplines, athletes in both disciplines must finish in the top six.

Meanwhile, three Indonesian athletes have confirmed their participation in the 2026 Asian Games.

They are Putra Tri Ramadani (men's lead), Sukma Lintang Cahyani (women's lead), and Ravianto Ramadhan (men's bouldering).
